One of the most outstanding companies in the US when it comes to creating high quality curricula came to us in the search of designing and developing the ecosystem for their community of teachers, authors and students to make the best out of the complex knowledge building strategies in their curriculum.

Remote research was how we unlocked the challenge

People’s goals are business goals

Our client is the very best at printed content, but digital is a whole new world, that’s why they came to us. We have been working with them for over one year, releasing several digital products, but this is the most ambitious one; the future of high-quality curricula. It was our responsibility to understand the business goals and user needs, with that, we created a robust ecosystem of micro-apps that aimed towards giving the best digital experience to an already wonderful curriculum content.

Defining the role and personality of each product in the ecosystem is key. We understand that the authors tool has to be flexible and robust. For the teachers we built the perfect companion, all functionality has the purpose of enhancing the content and the in-class experience. On the other hand we have students, for them we created four experiences, aiming to target four different age bands and giving them the right tools according to their context.

The system for the ecosystem

We had several designers working on 3 products and more than 16 features, all of them were part of the same product ecosystem, yet this ecosystem was starting from scratch, and there was no design system nor library. So our first step was to create the first UX guidelines and principles, the fist deliverable for this was the documentation, and the second one was our wireframe library of components and behaviour patterns based on Atomic Design. These two were iterative libraries that thanks to a careful documentation allowed simultaneous work for all designers in the team and the tracking for the developers tasking and sprint planning.

In addition, with accessibility as a goal
all the components were designed and their behaviour was well mapped for handoff and development. We defined how screenreaders should behave on each of the components, and how the components should be related to each other and to the overall screen layouts.

Releasing the kraken

After months of working under a pandemic context part of the products have been released, and the complete ecosystem is expected to be released early 2021, and be under the use of the more than 4M users that have adquired it by the start of the school year 2021-2022.
